Gone Girl is one of the most iconic modern thrillers for a reason. It shifts perspective and expectation, and just when you feel like you’re kinda figuring things out, the narrative pulls you in yet another direction.
The ending is unforgettable not only because of the twist itself, but because of how completely it changes the entire story. Do I think it is perfect? No. I do think there are some gaps in the story, but here’s the thing: even on a re-read I wasn’t feeling like the book ever made you unwilling to continue the suspension of disbelief we all willingly participate in as readers. So that’s good enough for me!

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Few mystery novels are as widely known as Murder on the Orient Express, and the ending is a big part of that reputation. The story traps Hercule Poirot on a snowbound train with a closed circle of suspects in a classic locked-room mystery setup.
Decades later, it remains one of the most talked-about endings in crime fiction. Personally, there are some other Agatha Christie books you’ll find below that I feel are even better than this one! Having said that, if you’re exploring books with unforgettable endings, this is essential reading and likely makes it to every single list you’ll find.
None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
This was my first Lisa Jewell novel, and it completely pulled me in from the start.
For most of the book, you’re never quite sure what’s true. The story raises questions about truth and perception, and that uncertainty keeps you on edge. Which is why I finished it in just 2–3 days because it has that addictive quality where you always feel like the next chapter will give you some more answers.
Actually, the ending works so well because the story doesn’t rely on a single twist. Instead, it slowly layers misdirection till the very end. Every time, it forces you to reconsider the context of what you’ve just read earlier.
It’s also the kind of ending that immediately makes you want to talk about the book with someone else – just to process everything that happened. In essence, None of This Is True is a fast, gripping psychological thriller with a payoff that lingers, which is why it makes it to my list of books with unforgettable endings…. I will be reading more Lisa Jewell!

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Another one of the more popular Christie novels, this is one of those books that ends up on every single mystery rec list. It’s easy to see why.
The setup is simple: ten strangers are invited to a remote island, and one by one, they begin to die. What follows is a slow burn tension where trust erodes quick. The suspense is tight and it’s incredibly hard to put down. Just on the basis of the final reveal alone, this one qualifies to be on your list of books with unforgettable endings. That’s why And Then There Were None is a must read just for the experience of it, even if you’re the type to shun popular recommendations!
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
I suppose Dark Places is one of the less popular siblings of Gone Girl, but in my opinion this one’s better. This is another thriller that builds toward a deeply memorable ending, and how!
The story revolves around a long-ago crime and the way it continues to affect everyone involved. As the story progresses, new information shifts your understanding of what actually happened and how events unfolded. What makes the ending unforgettable for this one, in my opinion, is how it brings all those fragments together.
If I had to summarize, I’d say: This is a gripping psychological thriller that rewards attention and patience.
I find that Dark Places also had a more satisfying ending – it ties up loose ends and gives you a sense of closure about the story. All while you still continue to marvel at the intricacies this author is capable of.

The Unexpected Guest by Agatha Christie
This Christie mystery stands out, in my opinion, because of how effectively it controls what the reader thinks they know.
The characters themselves are so individualistic; their interpersonal relationships, intricate. This story was first written as a play, which is why the setting it also an important character in this one!
It’s the kind of ending that makes you mentally rewind everything you just read. Truly a classic example of how Christie uses misdirection to full effect. And while I really like both Poirot and Marple, The Unexpected Guest has neither – and is still one of my long-term favorites for books with unforgettable endings!

They Do It With Mirrors by Agatha Christie
To round it off, here’s another fantastic Agatha Christie mystery where the layers and reveals keep you very, very engaged in the story.
This is one of the most insightful Christie books I have come across – and not just in terms of the story line or how the murder was carried out. The characters, their behaviors and personalities all make up a big part of the story. They Do It With Mirrors also provides an insight into the psychology and mental health views approaches of the times, which made for an interesting read.
What makes it my top pick of books with unforgettable endings is, of course, how it all plays out – but also – the disparate characters, plays, illusions, all woven through with the psychological theories all of time.
It’s a strong example of how Christie structures misdirection so that the ending feels surprising and satisfying once everything clicks in place.

And sometimes, it’s simply because there’s just something about the ending that makes it stay in your mind, long after you’ve finished the book.
For me, these seven books all do exactly that. Who knows, I’ll probably come back and add more if something makes me feel a certain way!
